Steward Farms Are Nothing More Than Backyard Gardens
Deception: Over and over again, including in their "Hoʻopili Urban Agriculture Initiative", D. R. Horton claims that "more than 250 acres land [at Hoʻopili] will be dedicated to food production" with 84 acres set aside for steward farms. What is a steward farm, you ask? According to Horton (see video at right), it's a backyard garden. And what Horton implies is that, somehow, these backyard gardens will contribute meaningful amounts of food to our community just like the farmlands that they want to pave over can do now.
Truth: Your "steward farm" will be nothing more than your own precious lawn turned into a vegetable garden. For an extra fee (paid to Horton), you will be able to have a fancy irrigation system installed when your house is built. What else makes a "steward farm"? A brochure. And that's it.
Horton claims that 84 acres will be available for backyard gardens. But not everyone who has the chance to install one will. And not everyone who installs one will end up growing anything. And not everyone who grows anything will grow edible crops (some people will grow flowers). Production levels of backyard gardens are nowhere near the levels that professional farmers get on real farms. Add in the fact that most of these gardens will get limited sun because they're so close to your house, your garage, or even your neighbor's house and it's clear that the 84 acres of backyard gardens translates to only a very small number of equivalent acres of farmland. When Horton claims that "more than 250 acres land will be dedicated to food production" you can begin to see just what a myth their statement is! |

Conclusion I: Horton is doing nothing special here. If you live in a home with a yard, you can have a home garden, a steward farm, right now! But, according to Horton, what they'll build will be something new, something unique, something special. It won't. Don't be fooled.
Conclusion II: Any significant level of agriculture and farming at Hoʻopili will end if this development is built. The precious farmlands there will be destroyed forever. Horton will throw everything they can at you to try and convince you otherwise. Don't be fooled.
